Plaster Restoration Process Begins

Restoring the ornate plaster ceiling of The Basilica is one of the most intricate phases of the restoration. Decades of age and deterioration have left the decorative plasterwork with cracks, flaking finishes, and areas where entire ornamental pieces have broken away.

Before work began in early June, plaster and paint conservation specialists conducted a thorough assessment to determine the appropriate restoration methods for each section of the ceiling. Now, working from scaffolding 75 feet above the church floor, the team from EverGreene Architectural Arts is carefully restoring the historic decorative finishes.

The process begins by removing loose and failing plaster before applying a specialized bonding agent to stabilize the damaged areas. Once the bonding agent has fully cured, new plaster is applied and meticulously shaped to match the original craftsmanship. The restoration of the ceiling will require months of painstaking work, preserving every flourish, corbel, and ornamental detail that has inspired worshippers for generations.

When visitors look up, they are meant to experience a glimpse of heaven. Through this careful restoration, that original vision will once again inspire all who enter The Basilica.
